Catholic Community Schools superintendent stepping down

Kevin Powers, the superintendent of the Catholic Community Schools system in the St. Cloud area, announced Sept. 14 that he is resigning, effective Dec. 15.

“We are grateful for Kevin’s service to Catholic Community Schools,” Father Ron Weyrens, chairperson of the CCS board of directors, said in a statement. “Under his guidance we have taken positive steps towards strengthening the presence of Catholic Education in the St. Cloud area. Kevin has positioned us to take the next steps toward our common goals.”

Father Weyrens said the board will begin to develop a succession plan and work with Powers on a smooth transition.

In his letter to CCS, Powers said it “has been an honor and privilege to work with all of you and more importantly get to know the students. I am very proud of the work being done at our schools, and they will continue to be successful for many years to come.

“As many of you know, my family and I moved from Chicago … to take this job and we cannot thank you enough for your support during this transition,” he said. “We truly appreciate all your support and prayers as my wife, Molly, battled with breast cancer.  She is in remission right now and doing amazing, and we cannot thank you enough for the support.”

Powers added that he has “full confidence in the Board of Directors and in Catholic Community Schools. I will support the Board of Directors during this transition to make sure it is smooth, and decisions are made in the best interest of our students.”

Powers was named CCS superintendent in March 2017 and officially began his position on July 1 that year.
