A letter from the Catholic Community Schools superintendent

The following letter was written by Kevin Powers, who was named March 20 as the superintendent of Catholic Community Schools, a new Catholic schools system in the St. Cloud metro area. He officially begins his position on July 1.

Dear Catholic Community Schools,

I am honored and excited to have been selected as the first superintendent for the Catholic Community Schools in the St. Cloud Metro.

Kevin Powers

Let me take a little time to tell you about myself and family. First and foremost, I am a husband and father. My wife Molly and I will be married five years this July. Together we have two little girls: Clare, who is 3-and-a-half years old, and Mary Colette, who is 1-and-a-half years old. We are excited for Clare to start attending preschool next year at one of the Catholic schools. Our family has lived in Chicago for seven years and we are sad to be leaving; however, we are excited to be starting our new adventure. Clare is most excited about having a garage, given that we currently live on the fourth floor of a condo with no garage.

My official start date as the superintendent is July 1 and I am looking forward to beginning. In the meantime, the Catholic Community Schools Board of Directors and the leadership team will continue to lead this endeavor. I will be visiting St. Cloud over the next two months to become more familiar with the area, schools, churches and, of course, to find a house for us to live in!

There are many questions about Catholic Community Schools. I want to reassure you that Bishop [Donald] Kettler, the CCS Corporate Board and the Board of Directors have done an amazing job laying the groundwork and foundation for this new school system. This Catholic school system will allow us to better serve all the St. Cloud area Catholic schools, students, families, staff, parishes and parishioners in providing a strong faith-based education.
Our goal is to be the “best of the best” with collaboration from the eight schools and the 19 parishes that support Catholic schools. We will ensure our Catholic schools remain strong and vibrant for many years to come!

My priority is to get to know the community, schools and parishes. I am here to serve you and do what is best for the hundreds of students in the Catholic Community Schools. With the help of the CCS Board of Directors, we will create a strategic plan that will help guide us for the foreseeable future, but not until I listen and hear from you first. I look forward to meeting you and learning from you.

During this transition, please pray for my current school, St. Margaret of Scotland, and my family. Please know that I will be praying for you as well.

God bless.
