Local collections for hurricane relief top $196,000

Parishes in the Diocese of St. Cloud contributed $157,887 to a special collection taken on the weekend of Sept. 9-10 for victims of Hurricane Harvey, as of Oct. 3, said Joseph Spaniol, the diocese’s finance officer.

Another special collection, taken for victims of Hurricane Irma Sept. 23-24 has brought in $38,803 as of Oct. 3.

Funds from both collections are still coming in, Spaniol said.

This brings the total to date from both hurricane relief collections to $196,690.

Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of Texas and Louisiana in late August, while Hurricane Irma caused heavy damage in September in the Caribbean and the southeastern region of the United States.

The funds collected are being used in the affected areas to support humanitarian aid, assistance with long-term efforts to restore communities after widespread destruction, and for the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the church in the U.S. and Caribbean, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
