Obituary: Benedictine Sister Dominica Freund

Benedictine Sister Dominica Freund, 80, died Oct. 5 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A Eucharist of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, St. Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, with burial in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at St. Scholastica Convent from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. Oct. 14 until the time of the funeral.

Sister Dominica (Carol Rebecca) Freund was born Sept. 29, 1939, to George and Anna (Rasmussen) Freund in Cando, North Dakota, the youngest of seven children. She attended public grade school and high school in Cando. She entered St. Benedict’s Monastery Sept. 8, 1959, and was received into the novitiate June 14, 1960, as Sister Dominica. She made her first profession July 11, 1961, and her perpetual monastic profession July 11, 1964. Sister Dominica celebrated her Golden Jubilee in July 2011.

She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in music at the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph. She taught third through sixth grades for 39 years, teaching at St. Paul School in St. Cloud, St. Benedict’s School in White Earth, Minnesota, St. John’s-St. Andrew’s School in Meire Grove, St. Mary’s Mission School in Red Lake, Minnesota, and St. Mary, Help of Christians School in St. Augusta. She then returned to the monastery in 2001, where she worked full time in the business office and transportation office. She moved to St. Scholastica Convent in 2019.

Sister Dominica is survived by her Benedictine community; her brother, Wayne (Marguerite); her brother-in-law, Dale Farbo; and sisters-in-law, Gladys Freund and Joyce Freund, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, George, Robert and John; her sisters, Benedictine Sister Rose Marie Freund, OSF and Elizabeth Farbo.
