Retiring educators recognized for their dedicated service

A number of long-time educators serving the St. Cloud Diocese will retire at the end of this school year. The Visitor recognizes these people for their extraordinary service. Visit our Facebook page at TheSt.CloudVisitor to share stories about these teachers and principals.

Sister Suzanne Slominski, OSB

•  Benedictine Sister Suzanne Slominski, the principal of St. John’s-St. Andrew’s School in Meire Grove/Greenwald, is retiring from a total of 69 years in education. Most recently she has been the principal for three years at St. John’s-St. Andrew’s. Before that she had taught computer for six years, after having already retired once from serving as their principal for 16 years.

Jean Gulden

•  Jean Gulden will retire after teaching for 45 years in the same school — St. Mary’s School in Breckenridge. Her fifth- and sixth-grade students especially loved her science lessons, like cooking eggs on the hot pavement and the plants that flourished in her classroom, said Linda Johnson, St. Mary’s School principal.

Fred Rupp

•  Fred Rupp will retire after 42 years of teaching sciences and 44 years of coaching cross-country at Cathedral High School in St. Cloud. He founded Les Voyageurs 47 years ago, an outdoor leadership program featuring a 28-day expedition into the remote Canadian wilderness for seven youth and one or two experienced guides. The Cathedral School community honored him May 23 with Fred Rupp Day.

Linda Hoon

•  Linda Hoon is retiring from All Saints Academy, St. Cloud campus, with 41 years of teaching kindergarten, and five more years in New Prague. She started teaching at St. Peter’s School, St. Cloud, the first year it offered kindergarten. A world traveler, she brought back experiences and videos to infuse real life into lessons about topics like kangaroos and lions, said her teaching partner, kindergarten teacher Rachel Mehrwerth.

Bob Doyle

•  Bob Doyle will retire from his position as principal of St. Mary School in Melrose for 38 years. Among the qualities that have impressed staff and families is that he has greeted each student by name every morning when they came into the school.

Janet Rybaski

•  Janice Rybaski will retire from Holy Trinity School in Pierz after a teaching career of 36 years — 26 at Holy Trinity and 10 more in St. Joseph School, Pierz, and a Catholic school in the Crookston Diocese. She shared her love of reading and learning with students in various grades. Most recently a music teacher, she will be remembered for getting students engaged in music — and drumming to a class unsure about their singing, said Debra Meyer-Myrum, school administrator.

Jim Boyle

In addition to this slate of outstanding educators is Jim Boyle, from St. Mary Parish in Alexandria, who is retiring from 43 years of having served in several parishes in many capacities — among them as a teacher, principal, director of religious education and parish administrator. St. Mary’s will honor Boyle with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. (short program at 2:30 p.m.) Sunday, June 25, at Carlos Creek Winery, Alexandria.
