St. Ben’s hosts Sept. 12 Peace Conference

The 30th annual Peace Studies Conference, “Moving Beyond Stereotypes: The Somali Community in Minnesota,” is Tuesday, Sept. 12, Room 204, Gorecki Center, College of St. Benedict. The event is free and open to the public.

The keynote speaker is Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Hussein’s speech, “The State of Civil Rights for Somalis and Other Muslims in Minnesota,” is at 7:30 p.m.   Earlier in the day are two panel discussions. From 1:05 to 2:25 p.m., the topic is “An Overview of the Somali Community in Central Minnesota.” From 2:40 to 4 p.m., a second group will consider “Somalis, Muslims and Education.”

The conference seeks to strengthen the relationship and develop a better understanding between the Somali and broader St. Cloud communities, and Minnesota at large.
