Bishop Neary: The wisdom of generations

One of the most beloved readings chosen by those preparing for ordination is the story of the call of Samuel. Like many, I have always seen myself in that young Samuel — open to God’s voice but needing the wisdom of someone like Eli to help me understand it.

In my own journey toward priesthood in the Congregation of Holy Cross, I’ve learned that we are always both Samuel and Eli. We must remain attentive to God’s voice, always listening. But we are also called to be mentors — to recognize God’s call in others and gently guide them forward, just as so many holy people have done for me.

From the very beginning, I had people who saw something in me — my parents, teachers, religious sisters and pastors. I recall how my vocation was first nurtured as an altar server at St. Joseph’s in La Porte, Indiana, and how my mother and father played a central role. My dad even reached out to Father Herman Reith at Notre Dame, whose letter helped me discern God’s call more clearly. That simple act changed the direction of my life.

Our faith is carried forward through the wisdom of generations. Like Eli, we are called to pass along the insight and grace that age and experience bring. This generational exchange is vital — not only for vocations but for the renewal of the Church itself. It’s at the heart of our diocesan pastoral planning process, All Things New. This effort invites every member of our diocesan family to listen attentively for what the Holy Spirit is asking of us, to respond in faith and to work together to shape the future of the Church in central Minnesota.

As bishop now, I remain committed to supporting and encouraging all of us to be open to the Spirit’s call, especially as we discern together. The All Things New tagline, “Honoring the past, Inspiring the future,” reminds us that each of us has a part to play. Let us continue to be Elis to the young Samuels in our midst — encouraging, guiding and praying for them. And to also be Samuels eager to listen, learn and respond courageously to those who went before us as well as those who walk beside us now.

May we walk together — across generations — with trust in Divine Providence and full hearts saying, “Here I am, Lord.”

Yours in Christ,
Bishop Patrick M. Neary, CSC
