A juvenile was charged with arson in the first degree for the fire that damaged St. Mary Church in Melrose in March 2016, according to a news release June 20 from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

When longtime parishioner Gail Schlicht, a retired nurse, learned that the pews salvaged after the fire that tore through the church March 11, 2016, were not going to be reused in the renovation, she was eager to see if she could get some of the rescued wood on her lathe.

Melrose parish hires liturgical design consultant

Based on recommendations from the Diocesan Building Commission, St. Mary Parish in Melrose has hired a liturgical design consultant to assist the parish community in taking the next step forward in rebuilding the church.

The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, the holy day that marks the arrival of the Magi to worship the infant Jesus and the manifestation of Christ to the world, was celebrated last Sunday, January 4. But did you know Epiphany lasts until next Sunday, January 11?

Father Scott Pogatchnik celebrated a special Mass Father Scott Pogatchnik celebrated a special Mass Dec. 28 at St. Mary’s Cathedral to close the Jubilee Year of Hope. The Holy Year opened at the Vatican Dec. 24, 2024, and will officially close Jan. 6, 2026, the feast of Epiphany. To celebrate the extraordinary year, the diocese’s millennium cross was refurbished to be used in the opening Mass and displayed all year. At the end of the closing Mass, the cross was moved to its permanent place near the tabernacle at St. Mary’s.
