Cathedral High School’s Ultimate Frisbee team is encouraging students from all over the greater St. Cloud region to get involved. The team’s status as a club sport — not directly managed by the school — means participation is not limited to students at Cathedral.
The sport, loosely affiliated with the national organization, USA Ultimate, uses the concept of “Spirit of the Game,” which places the responsibility of fair play on the athletes themselves by requiring each player to know the rules and make their own calls without the help of a neutral official.
The focus, according to the organization’s website, is fair play and fun.
“It’s a great opportunity for students from multiple schools and communities to come together to play,” said the team’s director of recruiting, Sabrina Schmidt, whose daughter will be competing in the upcoming season. “Even though she doesn’t attend Cathedral, she has always been welcomed with open arms. Between her teammates, the strong sportsmanship, and the love of the game, ultimate frisbee [season] has become her favorite time of year.“
Cathedral’s sponsorship brings Ultimate Frisbee, which is a spring sport, to the area.
“Without Cathedral offering this program, many of these students would either have to give up the sport or regularly travel to the Twin Cities to play,” Schmidt said. “This team makes it possible for local kids to participate in an incredible sport close to home.”
Schmidt says the team’s board is hard at work planning the upcoming spring 2026 season, with more information coming soon on their website, cathedralultimate.com.
“Ultimate frisbee emphasizes respect, teamwork and the ‘Spirit of the Game,’ ”notes Schmidt. “Many athletes find it is excellent cross-training for other sports during the off-season.”
