Catholic Charities presents Good Samaritan Awards

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud recently presented its annual Good Samaritan Awards to Rick and Susan Sovada and the Leighton Family at the Good Samaritan Awards dinner and reception.

Award recipients are recognized for following the example of the biblical Good Samaritan by helping those who are less fortunate without the expectation of anything in return, and for their support of Catholic Charities’ mission of serving and enhancing human dignity for people of all faiths and beliefs. They demonstrate community leadership while making a difference in the Central Minnesota community.

Rick and Susan Sovada — Ellie’s Army

Rick and Sue Sovada started Ellie’s Army in memory of their daughter Ellie who passed away in 2013. Ellie’s Army is a collective force for good; spreading compassion and kindness in the community and encouraging young kids to give back to the community they call home.

The Sovadas, along with those in Ellie’s Army, have been active supporters of Catholic Charites, specifically Catholic Charities Transitional Housing. A few years ago, Rick and Sue started to bring over a Thanksgiving meal for each of the homes. With the help of Ellie’s Army, they also sponsor every family at Transitional Housing for Christmas and gift the families with basic essentials and toys.

“Rick and Sue, along with Ellie’s Army, have truly blessed Transitional Housing and Catholic Charities with their generosity,” said Karli Cordie, Catholic Charities Transitional Housing program supervisor. “Their commitment to fulfilling and remembering Ellie’s life goal of being kind to everyone, has given hope and kindness to our residents and provides a positive example to our community.”

The Leighton Family — Leighton Broadcasting

Leighton Broadcasting and the Leighton family have been supporting Catholic Charities for over 37 years, when Al and Jean Leighton first became involved. Today, their children and the business they grew are carrying on their legacy through their support of Catholic Charities.

Leighton Broadcasting has been a Mardi Gras sponsor for over 30 years and they also continue to support Catholic Charities through Pack the Porches, Benefit Breakfast and more.

“Leighton Broadcasting and the Leighton Family are truly deserving of this award. They have given back in time, talent and treasure. They are a good Samaritan in our community, not only to Catholic Charities but to other nonprofits,” said Wendy Haus, Catholic Charities development officer.
