Each year on May 15, we celebrate the feast of St. Isidore, the patron saint of farmers and farm workers. The timing is especially fitting for our area, as many farmers are heading into the fields – or are already there – tilling and planting.

St. Isidore, born in Madrid, Spain, came from a poor and humble family and was a farmer himself. He was known for his devotion to God, his love of the earth and his diligent care in his farming practices. Stories about his life tell of domestic animals and birds showing affection and attachment toward him because of his kindness and gentleness.

St. Isidore lived a virtuous life rooted in deep faith, commitment to family, and care for the land.

While we celebrate St. Isidore let us also keep our local farmers in mind this spring. If you encounter farm equipment on the roads, always use a “safety first” approach:

  • Slow down! Farm machinery typically travels at 25 mph or less, so be prepared to slow down in order to avoid rear-end collision.
  • Watch for unexpected turns as equipment may enter or exit fields or driveways.
  • Be prepared to meet oncoming oversized equipment.
  • Maintain a safe following distance from farm equipment. Just because you see the equipment does not mean the operator sees you.
  • Do not attempt to pass unless it is both safe and legal to do so.
  • Look for turn signals before you pass and be aware that not all equipment may have them.
  • Allow adequate time and distance for farm equipment to make wide turns.
  • Avoid distractions while driving: texting, talking on a hand-held phone, etc.
  • BE PATIENT! Chances are you won’t have to follow for long distances and everyone stays safe!

As we honor St. Isidore, may his example guide us in supporting those who work the land and in fostering a safe, caring community throughout this planting season.

St. Isidore pray for us and our farmers!
