Are you interested in being a positive role model for students in our local schools? Consider making a difference by serving as an AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent.
Foster Grandparents are under the direction of classroom teachers and staff and often work with children to improve reading skills, increase their understanding of math concepts, completing art projects, shop classes and provide extra attention and support to students. The intergenerational relationships that Foster Grandparents have with the children they serve is unique. These relationships can be long-term and last months and even years as they build confidence and self-esteem in the children.
“As we begin another school year, we are reminded once again of the investment Foster Grandparents make to the youth in our community,” said Sara Heurung, Foster Grandparent program director. “Our volunteers serve as tutors, mentors and friends to kids who need them most. We are grateful for their efforts, and for the lives they change each school year.”
Foster Grandparents spend time eight-40 hours per week helping children in schools, early education programs, residential facilities and other nonprofit agencies. They receive a small stipend, training and other benefits for their service.
AmeriCorps Seniors, which is under the direction of AmeriCorps, consists of the Foster Grandparent Program, the Senior Companion Program, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. The Central Minnesota Foster Grandparent Program is sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud.
