Local events commemorate Fatima apparition

St. Cloud rosary rally

A public rosary rally will be prayed at noon Saturday, May 13, at the prayer garden at St. Katharine Drexel School, 428 2nd St. SE, St. Cloud, commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary’s first appearance to the children of Fatima, Portugal.

“It’s a hundred-year-old inspirational message,” said rosary captain Tom Rentz, who has been with the group America Needs Fatima for about five years. “We’re supposed to stand up for our faith and take it to the world. It’s all about prayer and America does need prayer.”

The rally, promoted by America Needs Fatima, based in Hanover, Pennsylvania, is one of thousands taking place across the United States on this date.

The goal of America Needs Fatima is to win the heart and soul of America for Mary by spreading her Fatima message and promoting devotion to her Immaculate Heart. Visit americaneedsfatima.org for more information.

Rosary-making, prayer planned for Holdingford event

The 100th anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 13, at All Saints Parish-St. Mary’s, Holdingford.

Those who attend are encouraged to bring rosaries — old or new — for a rosary “show and tell.” The event features making rosaries from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be light snacks, beverages and door prizes. All ages are welcome.

“The Blessed Mother put it on our hearts and our pastor, Father Greg Mastey, encouraged us to host this event,” said Elaine Eiynck, one of the organizers.

“We want people to know this is important,” Eiynck said. “My grandma was born in the 1800s and she used to talk about the apparitions in Fatima. I learned to love the rosary from her and the children at Fatima. This devotion now includes five generations in my family — my grandmother, my father, my nine siblings and me, my husband’s and my 10 children and 51 grandchildren.”

The day ends with praying the rosary on a walk to the Marian shrines on the grounds. (There also will be a rosary prayed inside the church for those not able to be outside.)
