The moms’ group at St. Boniface Parish in Cold Spring decided to make Mother’s Day about helping other mothers this year.
On May 2, they hosted a “baby shower” to gather items for Anna Marie’s Alliance in St. Cloud, a private non-profit corporation dedicated to providing safe shelter, support and referral services for battered women and their children.
They also collected items for Lutheran Social Service to support refugee families, including literacy sets that help young refugee children learn how to improve their reading skills through an LSS reading curriculum.
“Today in our meeting we talked about how Mary and Joseph were refugees,” said Melaine Myklebust, one of the moms in the group. “The women coming to these organizations for help are fleeing their current situations. We feel fortunate that we are able to live in safe homes. We really wanted to support moms who have to pick up and run.”

In addition to helping other mothers, the women took time to celebrate their own motherhood and their friendships with each other.
The group formed about a year ago and now consists of about 15 regular members and others who join in when they can.
The moms meets monthly at the parish where they often hear a speaker or talk about current events while the Christian Women’s group watches their children.
“Being a mom is beautiful and exhausting,” Myklebust said. “This group is a place for moms to find rest and encouragement. We are in the process of raising saints and it’s important to have a community that supports us along the way.”
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13.
