New Haehn Museum exhibit “With Lamps Still Burning” connects sisters’ past and present

A new exhibit opened March 19 at the Haehn Museum at Saint Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph.
The display, titled “With Lamps Still Burning,” connects the sisters’ present with their past. It is based on the book  “With Lamps Burning,” the historical record of the monastery written by Benedictine Sister Grace McDonald.

Published in 1957, Sister Grace said at the time, “The purpose of the book is to trace the growth of the convent of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph, Minnesota, from its establishment to the present.” Now, 68 years later, as the sisters of the monastery prepare to build a new, smaller home in St. Joseph, this exhibit documents the continuation of the Benedictine monastic life of prayer and work in new ways, giving tribute to the fact that the lamps are still burning.

This exhibit is open through Friday, Dec. 19, 2025. After a museum tour, guests are invited to visit Whitby Gift Shop, where items handmade by sisters and other artisans will be available for purchase. Complimentary copies of “With Lamps Burning” are also available.

The Art and Heritage Place is located at Saint Benedict’s Monastery, 104 Chapel Lane, St. Joseph, and houses the Haehn Museum and Whitby Gift Shop. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is closed Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call 320-363-7100 or visit www.sbm.osb.org.
