Obituary: Deacon Gregory John Steele

Deacon Gregory John Steele, 76, passed away on March 25, 2020 at Parkview Care Center in Buffalo. A private Mass of Christian Burial was held April 1, 2020 at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael, Minnesota. Interment was to be at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Becker. 

Deacon Steele was born Sept. 9, 1943 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Wardell “Jack” and Margaret (Schmitt) Steele. He graduated from Harding High School and received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from St. John’s University in Collegeville.

On June 14, 1969 he married Kathleen “Kathy” Kargel in St. Paul. They were blessed with six children.  
 
Deacon Steele was ordained to the diaconate for the Diocese of St. Cloud Dec. 12, 1981. He had most recently been serving at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael since January 2006. 

He retired from St. Paul Companies in 1998, where he had a 30 year career, before joining Catholic United Financial as an insurance agent.    

Deacon Steele was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and siblings Jackie Crawford, Mark Steele, and Joyce Mey.

He is survived by his children, Andrea (Tony) Wolf, Beth (Chris) Halvorson, Brenda (Pete) Ewing, Matt Steele, Peter (Jenny) Steele, and Theresa (Ben) Sartori; grandchildren, Ashley (Bill) Frank, Abby, Andrew, and Adam Wolf: Zach, Teddy, and Thomas Halvorson: Mckayla and Jackson Ewing: Simon, Philip, Eve, Solomon, and Phineas Steele: Grace, Ella, Kate, Hannah, and Luke Sartori; siblings, Jim (Carol) Steele and Patty (Wally) Sofie; and many other relatives and friends.
