Franciscan Sister Nancy Jean deMattos, 94, died Feb. 12 at St. Francis Convent in Little Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at St. Francis Convent. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at St. Francis Convent, with a Franciscan prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation continues from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Friday. The oldest of three children of John and Eva Marie (LaPlante) Dethier, she was born on June 7, 1930, in South Hampton, New York. Sister Nancy was a “Sister Mom,” having been married and raised her two children, Sharon and Stephen, before becoming a Franciscan Sister.
She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls on Dec. 30, 1984, made her first profession of vows Aug. 9, 1986, and final vows June 17, 1989. She was a Franciscan Sister for 40 years.
She worked as an office clerk, practical nurse, retail buyer and sales representative. As a sister, Sister Nancy ministered as an occupational therapy assistant, assistant activity director, switchboard operator and communications assistant. Sister Nancy served in Wisconsin and Colorado, St. Paul, Onamia and Little Falls.
Sister Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, son Stephen, and brothers, George and Robert. Survivors include her daughter, Sharon (Arthur) Broughton, Nevada City, California; granddaughters, Amy Monax and Annika Broughton; great-grandson Eric Monax and her Franciscan Community.
