Obituary: Sister Mary Pat Zangs

Franciscan Sister Mary Pat Zangs, 92, died July 7 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, in Sacred Heart Chapel at St. Francis Convent in Little Falls, with burial in the St. Francis Convent Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the convent from 9 to 11 a.m. July 13 until the time of the funeral. The service will be livestreamed: www.youtube.com/@FSLFvideos.

The third of John and Agnes (Foley) Zangs’ eight children, she was born Dec. 12, 1931, in St. Paul. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls July 31, 1952, made her first profession of vows Aug. 12, 1954, and final vows Aug. 12, 1957. She was a Franciscan Sister for 72 years.

Sister Pat earned a licensed practical nurse diploma from Miller Hospital School of Practical Nursing, St. Paul; became a registered nurse through St. Gabriel’s School of Nursing, Little Falls; earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota; and a master’s degree in psychology and wholistic studies from Antioch University, San Francisco, California. She also studied at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; State School of Science, Wahpeton, North Dakota; Edgewood College, Madison, Wisconsin; Clark College, Dubuque, Iowa; and St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri.

She ministered as a staff nurse, supervisor, administrator, counselor and instructor in hospitals located in Little Falls, Sauk Centre, Breckenridge and Moorhead, Minnesota, and in Wisconsin. She also served as director and counselor at Wholistic Growth Resources, Little Falls.

Survivors include siblings Kathleen (John) Kidd, New Brighton; Sandra (John) Vornbroch, North Branch; nieces, nephews and her Franciscan Community. Sister Pat was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Carol, Mary Bibeau, John, Martin and Alannah.
