Online Advent series will explore ‘culture of encounter’

“A Culture of Encounter: Advent(ures)” — a free online four-week Advent discussion group — begins Tuesday, Nov. 23. Facilitated by Leah Wakefield of St. John’s School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, the series invites participants to encounter God in and through the gift of differences in other people. Through sharing the Catholic faith, exploring culture and praying with Scripture, those who attend will foster cultural humility to engage with differences as disciples of Christ.

The group meets Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom. The schedule includes “Encountering Culture” (Nov. 23), “Encountering Abilities” (Nov. 30, with guest speaker Maureen Pratt, author and national speaker on topics relating to disability and religion), “Encountering Cultural Humility” (Dec. 7) and “Encountering Identities and Intersectionalities” (Dec. 14).

This Advent series is a collaborative effort between St. John’s SOT and the St. Cloud Diocese. It is part of the “Bridge-Builders for a Thriving Mission Initiative,” funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc.’s “Thriving Congregations Grant.” Watch for an announcement about participating in a Spanish-language version of the group. Visit https://www.thrivingmission.org for more information and to register by Friday, Nov. 19.
