A 1981 Valentine’s Day card created by Franciscan Brother Simon McKay is seen Feb. 12, 2023, at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington. Brother McKay, now 86, sent his parents a card each St. Valentine’s Day while they were still living (1955 to 1981). He created many in the three-dimensional box form constructed with lace, velvet and moving parts. He used “his talents in art and poetry and to reach out in love to his parents,” the monastery said. “The friars treasure these cards.” They were to remain on display in the lobby of the monastery church through February.
