Photos: St. Mary in Melrose celebrates lighting of exterior cross

Despite a chill in the air and threat of rain, cars filled the parking lot of the new St. Mary Church in Melrose Sept. 30 for a prayer service to celebrate the lighting of the exterior cross. The 105-foot cross, which was installed Aug. 21, is illuminated from within.
“This cross we light tonight is a reminder to all of us as a community that we are to be coworkers with Christ, that we are to be bearers of his cross and thereby bearers of Christ’s light,” said Father Marv Enneking, pastor of St. Mary Parish. “As we light this cross tonight may we, the Church, recommit ourselves to the cross of Christ.”
The dedication of the new church is set for Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.

Father Ken Thielman attended the cross lighting service.
While most people watched the service from their cars — listening to the audio on a local radio station — many chose to brave the cold bundled up in lawn chairs.
