Service dog Maggie Mae brings confidence and joy to SJAS students in Foley

For the past couple of years, St. John’s Area School in Foley has been fortunate to welcome a very special visitor — Maggie Mae, our beloved four-legged reading companion, along with her owner, Caren Kalenda. What began as an effort at the public library to encourage young readers has blossomed into a cherished program within our Catholic school community.

Caren originally hosted reading sessions at the public library but wasn’t seeing the level of participation she had hoped for. Knowing the value of programs like this, Karen Thorsten, one of our kindergarten teachers who frequently visits the Foley Public Library with her students, was contacted to see if SJAS might be interested. The answer was an immediate and enthusiastic yes!

At SJAS, we understand how essential reading fluency and confidence are for our students. Maggie Mae provides a unique and comforting audience for children to practice reading aloud. Sitting cozily beside them, she listens patiently as students read their chosen books. With Caren nearby to offer gentle guidance when needed, students feel supported every step of the way.

After each reading session, Maggie Mae delights students by performing a trick of their choice, whether it’s “pray,” “shake,” or a playful twirl, followed by a well-earned treat. These small moments bring big smiles and give students something to look forward to each week.

Maggie Mae typically visits on Tuesdays, and students eagerly anticipate her arrival. Some even select books ahead of time that they think she might enjoy. The experience not only strengthens reading skills but also builds confidence in a relaxed, judgment-free environment. Maggie Mae’s calm presence helps students feel at ease, while Caren’s encouragement fosters a positive and uplifting atmosphere.

This program has truly been a blessing for our little Catholic school. In addition, we are always looking for volunteers to help our students grow stronger in reading, writing and math. If you are interested in making a difference, we would love to welcome your support.

We are incredibly grateful to Caren and Maggie Mae for the joy, comfort and confidence they bring to our students each week.
