St. Cloud parish installs time capsule to end centennial celebration

As a final commemoration of their 2020 centennial, parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua Church in St. Cloud prayed over a time capsule at weekend Masses, June 12-13.

The time capsule and its contents were blessed, and the capsule was installed in a column in the gathering space. A framed scroll of congratulations from Pope Francis also was blessed. Afterward, parishioners celebrated the 100th anniversary with a light reception.

Last Dec. 13, Bishop Donald Kettler presided at the parish’s centennial Mass, said Sharon Asselin, member of the centennial committee.

“Few parishioners could attend but we were honored with previous pastors and assistants,” she said. “Most other events that the committee had planned for 2020 were sidelined by the pandemic.”

But the pandemic allowed the committee — Gary Stroeing, Brian Marek, Nancy Zaczkowski, Ida Burt  and Asselin — to complete the parish centennial history book.

“From this book, we hope our people of St. Anthony will realize what a rich history we have,” Asselin said. “We are so pleased that restrictions are being lifted so that we could complete the centennial celebration on the feast of St. Anthony.”

In the capsule they included the 2020 centennial book,  digital and paper copies of the 10 timelines created for the centennial, and a collection of coins from 1920 and 2020. Other mementos were a cup and deck of cards imprinted with the centennial logo, The Central Minnesota Catholic magazine’s December issue, a parish bulletin, mask, pictures from 2020 and two zip drives.
