Students at All Saints Academy in St. Joseph celebrated Superhero Day April 28 — an event to raise awareness about children’s cancer and funds for the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital and the Nicholas P. Koenig H.E.R.O. Foundation, which helps families affected by pediatric cancer.

The day was organized by fourth-grade teacher Theresa Fleege and preschool teacher Cheri Burg. It included several speakers: Cade Anderson, a Cathedral High School student who recently completed cancer treatment; Andrew Steffenson, a St. John’s University football player who is a childhood cancer survivor; and Shannon Koenig, mother of Nicholas, who died of cancer at age 4. She started the Nicholas P. Koenig H.E.R.O. Foundation in his name.

Students made a donation to dress as their favorite superheroes. The effort raised nearly $2,000.
