As the use of artificial intelligence accelerates, the Catholic Media Association is calling for its members to adopt a holistic, moral approach — one rooted in Catholic teaching — regarding AI.

The U.S. bishops urged House and Senate leaders in a June 9 letter to remember that while artificial intelligence presents opportunities, it also presents challenges. The bishops said policy considerations surrounding AI should be governed by an ethical framework.

Addressing an artificial intelligence session of G7, an international body involving the U.S. and six other highly developed liberal democracies, the pope called AI an “extremely powerful tool” that “generates excitement for the possibilities it offers” but also “gives rise to fear for the consequences it foreshadows.”

Catholic Answers, an organization which focuses on traditional apologetics and explanations of the faith, recently unveiled “Father Justin” an AI fueled avatar, who caused a backlash.

The Vatican has announced that “Artificial Intelligence and Peace” will be the theme for the next World Day of Peace.

In a conversation with Catholic News Service, Father Larrey, an author of two books on the rise of AI, reflected on how society should engage with AI as it becomes increasingly embedded in the lives of ordinary people through accessible technologies.

The Catholic Church encourages “the progress of science and technology at the service of the dignity of the person and for an integral and integrating human development,” the pope said.

Among the many potential problems needing attention are: AI replacing human labor; determining who is responsible for AI-generated mistakes and misinformation; the protection of privacy and limits of surveillance; the need for safety, transparency and fairness; and biases used in algorithms.
