Sister Ascensión de San José, an elderly nun whose head was crushed with a boulder during Spain’s 1936-1939 Civil War, is to be beatified as a martyr with 26 male Dominicans in the cathedral June 18, 2022.

The order was founded by the blessed martyrs’ fellow Lebanese Capuchin — Blessed Abouna Yaccoub, who was beatified in Lebanon in 2008 — whose tomb lies in the adjoining church.

As El Salvador gets ready for four beatifications Jan. 22, 2022, Bishop Hicks, who spent time as a missionary in the Central American country, says there’s a lot to glean from lives of the four martyrs from the tiny nation.

In October, Pope Francis had signed a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession of Pope John Paul I, clearing the way for his beatification. At the time, a date for the ceremony was not announced.
