St. Mary of Mount Carmel Parish in Long Prairie celebrated the eve of the feast Our Lady of Guadalupe Dec. 11 with a special Mass and telling of the story of the Virgin Mary’s appearance before Saint Juan Diego in a vision in Mexico in 1531.
With the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe closed for her feast to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Pope Francis said Catholics still can receive a plenary indulgence Dec. 11 and 12 for their Marian devotion if they follow certain conditions.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron of Mexico, the United States and all of the Americas. She is the protector of unborn children and continues to inspire poor and oppressed people worldwide. Her feast day is Dec. 12.
People on the sidewalks of Washington momentarily stopped their holiday shopping and paused in the cold Dec. 10 to take in the sight of hundreds of pilgrims processing through the streets alongside images of Mary.
