Two days after opening the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica to inaugurate the Holy Year 2025, Pope Francis will travel to a Rome prison to open a Holy Door as a “tangible sign of the message of hope” for people in prisons around the world, the Vatican announced.
Preparations are underway for the Holy Year 2025 which the Pope officially announced in February 2022. The jubilee’s theme is “Pilgrims of Hope” with a focus on “restoring a climate of hope and trust.”
Pope Francis opened the basilica’s holy door as part of the annual penitential rite and was the first pope to do so since 1294. He also prayed before the relics of St. Celestine, whose tomb lies inside the basilica.
Following Christ the King, whose regal power is love and mercy, means the whole church and each Christian must “follow his way of tangible love,” Pope Francis said.
