Marking the Sept. 1 World Day of Prayer for Creation, Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople issued a joint message that our obligation to use the earth’s goods responsibly implies the recognition of and respect for all people and all living creatures.

Catholics and other Christians not only must apologize to the gay community, they must ask forgiveness of God for ways they have discriminated against homosexual persons or fostered hostility toward them, Pope Francis said.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople said participating in the council is a “sacred mission.”
