The U.S. House of Representatives is set to look at two bills on the immigration front March 18, both seeking a path toward citizenship for two groups: younger unauthorized immigrants called “Dreamers” and a second one to help migrant farmworkers become citizens.
The chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Migration has urged the U.S. Senate to take action and pass a bill to protect “Dreamers” and as well beneficiaries of the Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure programs.
The American Dream and Promise Act, or H.R. 6, introduced to Congress March 12, builds on the DREAM Act and offers qualifying young people “permanent resident status on a conditional basis” and a path to full lawful permanent residency and eventual citizenship.
