The Visitor publishes first edition in Spanish

The Visitor published its first-ever Spanish edition Feb. 24.

Titled, El Visitante, the eight-page edition features columns by Bishop Donald Kettler, Father Oswaldo Roche, who ministers to the Latino community in the Diocese of St. Cloud, and Father Omar Guanchez, pastor of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Parish in Long Prairie. It also features a profile of a local couple and articles about marriage, immigration and the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Additionally, it includes news about upcoming events, including the Catholic Men’s Conference, Festival of Forgiveness, Diocesan V Encuentro and Diocesan Ministry Day.

Approximately 1,000 copies of the newspaper were published and will be distributed in parishes of the diocese that are home to the largest numbers of Latinos/Hispanics.

“This is our first attempt as a diocesan newspaper to reach an important segment of our Latino/Hispanic population,” said editor Joe Towalski. “If it is well received and we can find the funding, my hope is that we can publish El Visitante on a regular basis with assistance from the Latino/Hispanic community in the planning and writing.

“As our local Latino/Hispanic population continues to grow, we are challenged as a church to seek new directions to communicate the Good News in effective ways,” Towalski said. “El Visitante is one small but important step in that direction.”
