Obituary: Daniel Hollenhorst

Former St. Cloud diocesan Catholic schools consultant Daniel James Hollenhorst, 73, died Feb. 13. A celebration of life service will be held via Zoom at 10 am. (central time) Saturday, Feb. 26. The link will be posted at www.danhollenhorst.org that morning.

Dan was born in St. Cloud Feb. 28, 1948, to Melvin and Mildred “Honey” (McPhee) Hollenhorst. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1966, St. John’s University in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in English, and the University of St. Thomas in 1972 with a master’s degree in education.

He was an educator at Oak Grove Junior High, Bloomington, Minnesota; School Resource Center, Minneapolis Public Schools; Presentation Grade School, Denver, Colorado; St. Joseph Lab School, St. Joseph and Sts. Peter and Paul Middle School, St. Cloud, where he later also served as the administrative assistant. Dan was principal at St. Joseph Lab School, St. Joseph; activities/athletic director at Cathedral High School, St. Cloud; principal at St. Anthony’s/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, St. Cloud; and school consultant for the Diocese of St. Cloud.

Dan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Juliana Elchert; sister Karen (Dean) Sherburne of Woodbury, Minnesota; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Ken (Clare Eickhoff) Elchert (Los Altos, California), Antoinette (Dr. James) Somerville (Edina, Minnesota), Mary Beth Elchert (St. Paul), and Dr. Tim (Sue Carrels) Elchert (Woodbury, Minnesota); many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; and special Sri Lankan family Kasun, Nadeesha and Sasha (Reading, United Kingdom).

He was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Please direct memorials to Catholic Charities, St. Cloud.
