The Sept. 27 World Tourism Day brings a message of an inclusive approach to tourism and resist the temptations of individualism and nationalism from the Vatican.

Agrotourism, in particular, helps support local family farms, and visitors can learn a new, less hectic way of life in greater harmony with others and nature, wrote Cardinal Peter Turkson.

While tourism can broaden travelers’ horizons and improve local economies, it cannot be seen as being part of “sustainable development” unless it includes respect for workers’ rights, the local culture and the environment.
