Easter brings the promise of new life and reminds us that Christ — and Christ working through us — has the power to redeem and transform our lives and our world.

The 40 days of Lent are a time for us to refocus on “getting right” with God and others, and to convert our hearts and minds to better reflect the love of Christ.

This weekend we celebrate the third Sunday of Advent — “Gaudete Sunday” — a time to rejoice because the Lord’s coming is near.

Over the last year, I’m thankful that so many of our area leaders have continued to work for peace and unity among the diversity of cultures and faith traditions that call Central Minnesota home.

I, like many of you, was shocked by what I saw on television and in the newspapers. It was another reminder of the sad reality that our nation continues to struggle with the blight of racism, bigotry and intolerance.

Each year, your generosity through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports the work of ministries that promote the sacred dignity of human life, foster vocations, evangelize our youth, nurture families, welcome the stranger and heal the wounded.

I have wondered, “What can I do — what can we do — as a Catholic community in central Minnesota to honor the memory of the victims and to be instruments of mercy and peace in our world?”
