Deacon Frank A. Schmainda, 80, of Glenwood, died Friday, May 27, at Autumn Cottages Assisted Living in Alexandria. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Glenwood Friday, June 17, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to Mass. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood.
Deacon Frank A. Schmainda, was born to Frank and Angeline (Studniski) Schmainda, the third of four boys, Nov. 26, 1941, at the family farm in St Anna. At the age of 12, he attended St. John’s Preparatory School for pre-seminary, graduated from St. John’s Preparatory High School in 1959 and St. John’s University in 1963, with degrees in philosophy and classics (Latin and Greek) with a minor in English. He was an English and Latin teacher in Glenwood from 1964 until he retired in 1997.
Deacon Frank was married to Linda (Scepaniak) at St. Hedwig Church in Holdingford on July 29, 1967. The couple had three children: Tom, Teri, and Bryan. He had a passion for helping others and will be remembered for his love of family and strong faith. He enjoyed working outside in his flower and vegetable gardens.
Deacon Frank was ordained to the permanent diaconate by Bishop George Speltz in 1982 and served many years at Sacred Heart Church in Glenwood, performing baptisms, weddings, funerals and celebrating Mass. He started weekend Communion services at both nursing homes in Glenwood, began a food shelf out of the basement of the church and later help to organize the Hearts and Hand Community Food Shelf.
Deacon Frank is survived by his wife Linda of 54 years, children Tom (Carla) Schmainda, Teri (Bruce) Middendorf, and Bryan Schmainda, brother Jim Schmainda, grandchildren Miranda Middendorf, Bailey Middendorf, Dakohta Schmainda, KayLynn (Josiah) Ruch, Alexandria Schmainda, Sarah Schmainda, and great-grandchild Milo Ruch.
He was preceded in his death by his parents and brothers, Elmer Schmainda and Richard Schmainda.
