Travis Spillum makes first vows as monk of St. John’s Abbey

Travis Spillum made first vows July 11 as a Benedictine monk of St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville. He was born and raised in Little Falls, the son of Jason and Stacy Spillum.

He attended Little Falls Community middle school and high school and St. John’s University in Collegeville, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics. Following his graduation from St. John’s, he was accepted into the Benedictine Volunteer Corps where he lived and worked for a year of service with the sisters of St. Gertrude’s Convent in Tanzania, Africa. He was then employed as a forecaster by Best Buy in Minneapolis for two and a half years.

“I am grateful for the community of St. John’s Abbey and the friendships I have made,” Spillum said. “I continue to be filled by the prayer life and camaraderie that drew me here, and I look forward to growing in monastic life as I begin studying at St. John’s School of Theology and assisting the abbey Guesthouse’s business office and spiritual life program.”
